Best 3-Star Budget Hotels In Venice – Have Fun, Spend Less!

What you've heard about us is true — when in a bewitching place like Venice we like to splurge a bit and treat ourselves special. But sometimes we're on a budget. At those times, even though we want to spend less, we still want to be in the centre of things, we still expect great service, and we want to feel comfortable.

With that in mind, we dusted off the palla di cristallo (crystal ball) and peered deep into the Venice hotel scene. What we discovered is that there are some pretty darn good 3-star hotels where you spend less, but still get a great experience. Of course, we didn't abandon our criteria. Here are the standards we insist on:

  • Located in the heart of Venice.
  • On the water whenever possible. Although one of our faves here is on a vibrant market street.
  • Situated in visitors' favourite parts of Venice, with a location rating of 93%-plus.
  • Overall guest approval rating of 93% or more, with a minimum of 300 reviews.
  • 5-Star Luxury designation.
  • Free WIFI.

Even with those exacting criteria, we've unearthed four 3-star budget hotels that we think you're going to love. Just stare into our crystal ball —

Hotel Antiche Figure

Hotel Antiche Figure

Although located right on the Grand Canal, and close to the train station, the Antiche Figure is tucked away next to the miniature domed church of San Simeone Piccolo, on the San Croce quay, with easy walking access to the great things in Venice. Or cross on the nearby bridge and hop on the water ferry for a ride along the Grand Canal to Per San Marco and walk to the famous basilica.

The rooms are simple but nice, with pleasing Old World patterns in the fabrics and carpets. (In general, the rooms look and feel a bit nicer than many of the hotel's photos indicate.) For our money, the best choice is a canal view room.

We very much enjoyed our stay… very welcoming, the staff friendly, the breakfast excellent… The hotel is clean, well presented and in an excellent location. The staff even arranged a surprise cake to celebrate my partner's 50th birthday. The room had a good view and arriving by water taxi was even more convenient as it dropped us immediately outside the hotel entrance. We would certainly return and recommend this hotel to anyone who wishes to have a personal and friendly experience."

Hotel Sant'Antonin – A Garden Retreat

Hotel Sant'Antonin

The Sant'Antonin is on the other side of the small city that is Venice, close to Piazza San Marco and also 10 minutes from the Doge's Palace. Situated on Rio de la Pleta canal, you also have the quay, Fondamenta Furlani, in front of the hotel for great pedestrian access. But what's really unexpected is the amazing secluded garden in back of the hotel, where you can relax on the terrace or even eat your breakfast. A lovely refuge.

The rooms are decorated with European antiques and most of them have a surprising amount of natural light. The bridge almost directly in front of the hotel means that Basilica San Marco is no more that 10 minutes away, and the rooms are very nice, but, really, there's nothing like that garden!

An oasis of tranquillity near to St Marks Square. The hotel and garden lived up to our expectations, the garden being particularly beautiful — a real oasis away from the hustle of Venice. Having a delicious breakfast served on the terrace leading to the garden was a delight each morning. Our room was large and comfortable, and beautifully furnished… We would not hesitate to return to this lovely hotel."

Hotel Le Isole

Hotel Le Isole

You're in the middle of things, with San Marco 5 minutes away. The Isole is a small hotel, only 13 rooms, which helps to ensure you get individual attention. A lovely benefit here is the interior courtyard, where breakfast can be taken and where you can rest in the middle of your day of touring. (Since it's so easy to get back to the hotel.) Fondamenta Vin Castello runs in front of the hotel, so you can walk along the canal to nearby bridges.

The rooms are charmingly named after islands in the Venice Lagoon. Decor is a pleasing blend of a classic Venetian style with contemporary Italian. It works surprisingly well. You can opt for an economy room, a spacious family room, or go Deluxe, for larger, brighter spaces (and amazingly affordable for Venice).

• Campo San Provolo – Castello 4661, Castello, 30122 Venice, Italy

Great hotel in a great location… close to the Lagoon, St. Mark's Square, and lots of restaurants. The staff are very friendly and the breakfast is wonderful… The hotel has a pretty inner courtyard where breakfast is served. We also found it to be a welcome oasis from the hustle and bustle that is Venice… The rooms and beds were comfortable. I highly recommend this hotel for your stay."

Hotel Arcadia

Arcadia Boutique Hotel

This über-charming boutique hotel has 17 rooms, and each one is decorated in a distinct way. The Arcadia is housed in what was a 17-century palazzo, with a style reflecting the magnificence of Renaissance Venice. Many of the period decorations either remain or have been restored (check the terrazzo flooring in the lobby), yet no detail of modern comfort and convenience has been forgotten. The bathrooms are marvels.

As for location, you're only 5 minutes from the train station, but you're on a market street, used by residents, in the heart of real Venice.
